Swindon experienced further growth acceleration in the Industrial Revolution when the Wilts and Berks Canal was built in 1810 and in 1819 the North Wilts Canal. These canals brought trade to the area and supported population growth. Swindon later became a railway town - marked by the construction of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Swindon Works locomotive maintenance and repair.
Cultural Scene in Swindon
There are many events that take place in Swindon, including Swindon Festival of Literature, Gay Pride Parade and the Summer Breeze Festival. It has a live music scene with venues such as The Victoria and The Beehive attracting touring national acts as well as local acts; and two main shopping areas, The Brunel Centre and the Parade. There are several retail parks like West Swindon Shopping Centre and Greenbridge, as well as small specialist shops and an indoor shopping mall for reduced price goods.
Swindon makes an appearance in fictional literature in ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ as well as the Thursday Next novels by Fforde. The latter feature an alternative universe version of the city – with the ‘Seven Wonders of Swindon’ showcasing an extremely rare species called The Elgin Llamas; and Vavoom statue near the bus station.
