Swindon is located in the ceremonial county of Wiltshire in South west England. It is approximately 70 miles away from London, 35 miles west of Reading and an equal distance to the east of Bristol. Swindon saw a dramatic increase in population in 1952 when it was named an ‘Expanded Town’ under the Town Development Act and today has an estimated population of 186,000 at the 2011 census.
With roots as a small market town, Swindon was used mainly for barter trade until 1848, which is still present today on top of the hill in central Swindon (now referred to as Old Town). Swindon experienced further growth acceleration in the Industrial Revolution when the Wilts and Berks Canal was built in 1810 and in 1819 the North Wilts Canal. These canals brought trade to the area and supported population growth. Swindon later became a railway town - marked by the construction of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Swindon Works locomotive maintenance and repair.
