30 miles south-east of Leeds, 23 miles west of Scunthorpe and 50 miles east of Manchester, Doncaster is a large town in the county of South Yorkshire. It is also part of the borough of Doncaster with a population of over 77,000, around a quarter of the total population of the metropolitan borough.
Doncaster: Then and Now
At one point along the town’s history, Doncaster was a burh, an Old English fortified settlement. After the Norman Conquest it was refortified, Conisbrough Castle was constructed and by the time it was mentioned in the Domesday Book, Hexthorpe (a village on the edge of Doncaster town) was noted to having a church and two mills. As the 1200s approached, it had matured into a bustling town and it was granted national recognition with a town charter in 1194 by King Richard I.
Today Doncaster is a large settlement which is owing to the development of coal mining and the subsequent dramatic expansion in the borough and population. Some economic hurdles were introduced in the town with the closing of the coal mines in the 1970s and early 1980s, after which the town developed its service industry, the tertiary sector of the economy.
With its good communication links with the rest of the UK, Doncaster was supported in its entry and development of its service industry. Another thing that helps the town economically is its waterways. Due to these particularly useful links, Doncaster town emerged as a busy centre with vast migration to its centre. It has a number of distribution centres due to its proximity to major urban areas and rail/motorway infrastructure.
Doncaster is home to the Doncaster Dome – one of the UK’ top Sports and Leisure attractions. With over 1 million visitors per year the dome is the go to for swimming, ice skating, concerts and events, and children’s Play Zone. The town’s award winning markets include Doncaster Market, one of the best traditional markets in the county, with everyone from the local community to celebrity chefs giving it praise. With a wide range of accommodation, its own airport (Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield) and location on the A1 and M18 motorways – there really isn’t an excuse not to pay this European hub a visit!
