Basildon town is the largest in Basildon borough and located in the south of the county of Essex in England. Near the Thames Estuary (where the mouth of the River Thames meets the waters of the North Sea) – Basildon is approximately 32 miles to the east of Central London, 10 miles from Chelmsford city and an equal distance away from the seaside town of Southend-on-Sea. Basildon was created as a new town in the 20th century under the New Towns Act 1946 as a result of World War II.
Basildon: Then and Now
Basildon first makes an appearance in history records in 1086, in the manuscript record ordered by William the Conqueror, the Domesday Book. It appears under the name ‘Belesduna’, with various other names throughout history including Batlesdon and Berdlesdon. Originally held back from development in the 19th century with a fear that the town would become a commuter suburb of London, it eventually underwent expansion in the 1940s due to a lack of amenities and its poor development. Eight towns were created under the New Towns Act in South East England, and the Basildon Development Corporation was created afterwards in order to transform the town into a modern area.
In a slightly eccentric attempt to attract more visitors to Basildon, in March 2010, a miniature Hollywood sign reading ‘Basildon’ was erected. This sign stands at one-ninth the height of the original Hollywood sign.
There are seven secondary schools in the Basildon area and three Further Education colleges. Easily accessed by both train and car, two main roads (the A13 and the A127) exist as commuter trunk roads and give easy access to the M25. Trains that serve Basildon run on the London, Tilbury & Southend Line, and transport between Fenchurch Street and Southend/Shoeburyness.
