Since then its population has rapidly increased – much owing to the abundance of iron ore and coal in the early 19th century. The iron industry in Aberdare is marked by the establishment of the Ironworks in Abernant and Llwydcoed; with the coal industry following decades later. It was in 1836 when the coal pits were sunk in quick succession – when high-calorific value steam coal was exploited.
Today Aberdare has come a long way from its humble, agricultural beginnings. Also known as the Queen of the Valleys, despite the closing of mines after the industrial revolution, there are still Victorian buildings and streets that preserve the town’s history. For those looking to visit Aberdare, there are a range of pubs, restaurants and shops to explore and an excellent art gallery as well as museum.
