The paternity test is a sensitive issue but pre-natal tests can carry risks. Paternity tests are becoming more common but for each family it can cause heartache and despair. Prenatal Paternity Test
A prenatal paternity test shows conclusively who the father of the child is, so long as the father is tested. The test is conducted the same way as many other prenatal tests - either by chorionic villus sampling, which collects cells from the placenta using a catheter introduced via a needle into the vagina or abdomen, or by amniocentesis, where a needle inserted into the abdomen collects cells from the amniotic fluid. Both these procedures are accompanied by small health risks for both mother and child, which is a good reason to consider the benefits of proving paternity before birth over the potential risks.
Postnatal Paternity Test
A post-natal paternity test can be carried out as soon as the baby is born and carries no risk to the mother or baby. Cells are collected from the baby and sent for testing, and with results available in just a few days it is a straightforward procedure that gives both parties plenty of time to consider the potential outcome of the paternity test.
