A DNA paternity test involves looking at the DNA from the people being tested. It is possible to establish the relationships of the people by comparing their DNA because DNA is inherited from the parents - a child gets half its DNA from its mother and half from its father. You may be referred to an NHS counsellor by your GP, or you can pay for private counselling. The father and the child will need to be tested and sometimes the mother as well. Everyone needs to give written consent to the test. If the child is under 16 a person with parental responsibility must act on their behalf. The opinion of an older child or young person should be sought if possible. Parental responsibility belongs to the mother; the assumed father; a legally appointed guardian or anyone else who has legal responsibility for the child. You cannot get a DNA paternity test on the NHS. There are many companies that offer the service on the internet. Make sure you research the companies carefully to find out if they offer high standards of service and product. Tests that are done at home (often called 'peace of mind' tests) vary in price but are obtainable at £78. Tests that would be accepted in a court of law also have to be paid for, unless you are getting government help with your legal fees. Your local Citizen's Advice Bureau will be able to advise you on DNA paternity testing and it is also worth seeing your GP. They may be able to recommend a company and may even take the necessary samples for you. You can also contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for advice. If you need to get a court directed DNA paternity test the Clerk of the Court will be able to provide a list of approved testers that you can use. In the case of the Child Support Agency requesting a test to establish who should be paying child maintenance they will provide you with a list of GPs who can take the samples. The CSA will then probably employ a company to carry out the tests for it. DNA paternity tests are extremely easy to carry out - they are painless and the results can take as little as five working days.
