The new town’s inhabitants came mostly from Birmingham or Wolverhampton, as well as the inhabitants of the merger towns of Madeley and Dawley for example, making up the original population.

Telford town is not very far from the Severn Gorge formed by the River Severn and now known as the Ironbridge Gorge. This gorge is a well-known tourist destination with World Heritage status as designated by UNESCO. Places near the Ironbridge Gorge area are internationally noted as being extremely important to the Industrial Revolution, especially Coalbrookdale.
Telford Town Centre is the commercial centre of the town and is situated near Junction 5 of the M54 motorway. Telford and Wrekin Council were based here before 2012, with a large Odeon cinema, various office blocks and Telford Shopping Centre (and Town Park) also in the area.
