Bradford: Then and Now
First recorded in history as ‘Bradeford’, the town got its name from the Old English, brad and ford which was the crossing of the Bradford Beck around which a settlement grew. Sometime in the medieval period Bradford grew into a town which was centred on Ivegate, Kirkgate and Westgate. After this, during the reign of King Henry VIII, Bradford (which started out with one fulling mill and a soak mill) overcame Leeds as a manufacturing hub. After this period, for the next 200 years, Bradford grew slowly in correlation with the increasing prominence of the woollen trade.
Today Bradford is an easily accessible and heritage-rich district boasting two UNESCO sites and an abundance of culture and languages. Bradford became the world’s first UNESCO City of Film in 2009 with its notable filmmaking. Bradford is also home to Saltaire – a Victorian village built in 1851 by Sir Titus Salt – and now today a designated World Heritage Site. The highest level of protection has been given to Saltaires’ Congregational church which is Grade I listed.
Famous birthplace of David Hockney - his fantastic pieces can be viewed in the Salts Mill and Cartwright Hall art galleries. As well as being a thriving arts scene it is has also been dubbed ‘Curry Capital of Britain’ – a title the city had held for 4 years in a row as of 2014. With 200+ Asian restaurants, the Michelin starred Box Tree, real ale bars and craft beer houses; Bradford is more than competent to satisfy your food and drink appetite, you’ll definitely find something to enjoy whilst on your visit.
